Rōjo [老女] Noh Mask

老女(ろうじょ / Rōjo) is the dignified “old woman” mask of Noh: a face where fading beauty and inner refinement quietly coexist. In this carved wooden example with an undeciphered seal-script mark on the reverse, the familiar onna-type features are gently hollowed, inviting attention to age, memory, and restraint rather than spectacle.

Questions about its character, condition or delivery are welcome.

Used for elderly noblewomen and once-celebrated figures now living in obscurity, Rōjo embodies mono no aware and yūgen—emotion suggested rather than displayed. Narrow eyes, a small tightened mouth, and subtly bony cheeks allow the expression to shift with light and tilt, making this modern Noh-style mask a contemplative presence on the wall or in a small alcove.
